How did you learn to draw?
I learned the same way every artist does: practice, practice, practice! You hear this often because it's true. Other than that, I'm almost entirely self-taught, seeing as the only formal training I've ever had was a handful of art classes during grade school. I learned on my own, mostly from observation and experimentation. Cartoons, video games, comic books and storybooks are fantastic for reference and inspiration.
Do you have any tips on how I can become a good cartoonist?
Again, practice. Draw a lot, and often. When it comes to cartoons, my favorite advice for folks who want to get proficient at them is NOT to just try and copy your favorite internet artist or anime style, but rather, learn from The Old Masters. By this I mean study the works of Disney, Warner Bros., Don Bluth, etc. These are the people who pioneered animation as we know it today, and they are a fantastic place to start learning the basics of cartoon structure, exaggeration, expressions and stylization. Don't try to go diving into the more exaggerated styles without getting a handle on the basics, first! Stylization will come naturally later as you learn. I also highly recommend a book called Cartoon Animation by the late Preston Blair. This book is excellent for cartooning basics and starting out!
How long have you been drawing?
Ever since I could hold a crayon :)
What materials do you use to create your art?
With traditional media, I use pencils, inks, ballpoint pens, colored pencils and markers (occasionally). With digital, I primarily use Photoshop and Illustrator.
Will you teach me how to draw?
Unfortunately I do not have the time nor the resources to be able to personally teach everyone who asks me how to draw. My advice to you is again, practice, and take a few basic art courses to get started if you can. Check out that Preston Blair book I mentioned earlier if possible, and watch a lot of cartoons ;)
Will you draw my personal fan character?
If I am open for personal commissions, sure! Check out my Buy Section to see if I am accepting personal commissions at this time.
But I have no money, I can't pay you. Will you just draw for me for free? I'll be your best friend and be eternally grateful!
Sadly, I cannot honor freebies, as I do not have the time to draw free art for everyone who asks, nor is it at all fair to the folks who have commissioned me for their works. Yes, laugh all you want, but I have honestly received countless emails saying this!
Do you do trades?
Not often. I'm usually too backlogged to accept them.
Can I use your art for icons, my website, role-playing, signature tags, etc.?
I would really rather you didn't. When it comes to my personal original artwork, absolutely not. Such holds true for gift art I have done for friends of their own characters as well. I generally prefer that you do not use my art for your own purposes, but if you absolutely have to, sometimes I allow some of my fan-art to be used. If you have such intentions, please be sure to contact me about it and ask my permission first.
Can I send you gift art or fan-art?
Of course you can! All I ask is that if you wish to draw any of my personal characters, please credit me for their copyright and creation. Other than that, I love getting fan-art from folks. Some of you are insanely talented!
Do you chat on AIM/MSN/Yahoo/ICQ?
Not publically, otherwise I'd never get anything done! :D I tend to be somewhat private about chat, so I only give out my screenname to folks I know and/or need to do business with. Sorry!
